So what is 2D, 2.5D and 3D I have been hearing about?
The differences between 2-2.5 and 3D.
When talking or asking about a design project, whatever that may be, you will often hear the terms 2D, 3D and sometimes even 2.5D. So what are the differences between them?
They are the three types of animation. No matter what style is chosen; traditional drawn animation, stop motion, digital drawn, you have to select between 2D, 2.5D and 3D – all the aforementioned styles can do all 3 types. So what are the differences between 2-2.5 and 3D?
2D Animation
The simplest form of animation, in terms of complexity. 2D animation is flat and may lack the dynamism of the other two formats. It is the oldest one as well, and in terms of price, the cheapest of the three. It involves frames (images) drawn by hand or through software in a computer in a flat plane, lacking highly technical visuals. Because of the minimal movement of angles and, in general the 3rd dimension, it is much more relaxing for the eye; causing less strain.
You can view a 2D animation example through one of our own projects, Gold Reserves, here:

2.5D Animation
Not 2D, but not fully 3D either, this format of animation lies in between 2D and 3D. 2.5D is achieved by embedding 3D objects inside a 2D environment. This creates the illusion of a third dimension. Think of parallax images you often see in mobile phones or in websites lately; these too have a 2.5D approach. Concerning its price point, it stand between 2D and 3D; more expensive than the former, and cheaper than the latter.
Our Llaeth Y Llan (Village Dairy) 3rd TV commercial “Celebration” is a good example of 2.5D animation. You can view the project here

3D Animation
The most complex animation form, 3D animation, is truly immersive to watch. Think of Pixar animations you may have seen in cinema; all of their movies are 3D animations. This format contains dynamism, with the ability to switch cameras, motion and angles creating a lifelike; or filmic, experience. However, its complexity comes with a price tag; it is the most expensive format of the lot. We have created 3D animations, during our years of operation.
